What sort of trains operate services on the line?
Northern Rail operate diesel unit trains (either 158s or 156s) on the Settle-Carlisle Line, all travelling between Leeds and Carlisle. In addition, on summer Sundays, Northern Rail also operate Dales Rail services from Blackpool and Preston to Carlisle via the Settle-Carlisle line. What about steam trains?
Steam and diesel charter services occasionally operate over the line, although they do not normally stop at local stations. The majority of charter trains start and end their journey in other parts of the country. To obtain information about planned steam excursions, go to www.uksteam.info
What about fares on the line - how much does it cost and are there rover and ranger tickets available?

Is there a local user railcard scheme?
Dales Railcards cost just £10 and can be purchased by residents in the postcode areas adjacent to the line. The card entitles holders to a one third discount on fares and permits up to four accompanying children to travel at discounted child fares. Are Senior, Family & Friends, Disabled, Forces and 16-25 Railcard discounts available?
Yes, all national railcards are valid for travel on the line. Certain rover tickets do not permit discounts - see our Timetables and Fares page.
Can I use a Britail pass?
Yes, travellers to Britain can use their Britrail pass to travel on the line (www.britrail.com)
Can dogs travel on the trains?
Yes, there is no charge and each person can take a maximum of two dogs.
Can I take my bicycle on the train?

What facilities apply to groups travelling on the line?

Are facilities available for wheelchairs and powered scooters?
Wheelchairs and powered wheelchairs can be carried on trains operated by Northern Rail on the line. All trains have space for at least one wheelchair.
For safety reasons Northern Rail can't take any mobility scooters on the trains unless they can be folded down before boarding and carried on like luggage.
